Golf Club Fitting Guide

There’s a lot of different things golfers will say when they make a bad shot. There are so many excuses that we couldn’t possibly list them all here. One of the worst excuses that we hear a lot of is that bad clubs are to blame.

This may in fact not be as absurd as it sounds on its face. In some cases, there really can be characteristics of clubs which can have a deleterious effect on your game.

Custom fitted clubs which are adjusted specifically for how you swing can make a large, positive difference in your golf game.

You could in fact not be getting the most out of your swing because of clubs which are not properly fitted for you.

As a case in point for how much difference your clubs can make to your golf game, take Phil Mickleson in the Masters 2006. He used two different drivers during the tournament. He was a able to get a fade with one, a draw with the other without adjusting his swing one bit!

No two players have exactly the same swing – this is why custom fitted clubs can make such a huge difference to your game.

Clubs that were adjusted with someone else in mind are not going to allow you to get the most out of your game. You’ll be expending a lot of effort trying to adapt to the clubs.

Ideally, your club should work for you towards a better swing, not the other way around as in the case of non-custom fitted clubs. When you use clubs which are custom fitted, you can figure out and correct more easily any problems with your shots.

Club fitting has come to be seen as the important element of every golfers game that it is. Many golf courses and pro shops now offer custom fitting, which is relatively inexpensive (around $100) considering the great benefits which this has for you game.

The lie angle is one of the most important parts of your club’s configuration. If the lie angle is off from where it needs to be, it can result in your shots being off by as much as 40 degrees!

Some other things that will be assessed during a custom fitting session are launch angle, ball contact position and clubhead speed, among many factors that will be looked at. What exactly will be evaluated during this session depends on where you have it done.

Does all this sound just a little too time consuming for your taste? There are easier ways, such as the ‘club fitting wizard’ at Pinemeadow Golf or the ‘Smart Fit System’ at Golfsmith.com. Having a friend to help you with some of the measurements you’ll have to take can make this a little easier.

Before you buy a new set of clubs, you would do well to have a custom fitting, which can save you a lot of trouble in the future. Properly fitted clubs are the best place to start if you are having a lot of difficulties with your swing.
