It’s fair to say that golf isn’t normally considered the coolest sport in the world, but when you think about it a life on the fairways is actually pretty rock ‘n roll. Not convinced? Let me tell you why…
Golfers get a lot of stick for their fashion, but a lot of what they wear is actually pretty flair. A traditional golfing outfit kind of puts a smarter twist on the glam rock of the 80s. Everywhere you look on the course outlandish colours are on display.
Take a look at the current PGA Tour crop and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Ian Poullter dresses a lot like Axl Rose, and Rickie Fowler looks like he belongs in Limp Bizkit!
The Bad Boy Image
The antics of modern day professional golfers have completely changed the sports image. It used to be seen as a civilised hobby for the seriously wealthy, but the recent antics of a certain Mr Tiger Woods have shown us what it’s really about, scoring chicks!
Tiger had so many women waiting for him in cities around the world that even the randiest drummer would struggle to compete. It’s said that Tiger has slept with 121 women which is admittedly someway off the 4897 who’ve been shown a good time by Gene Simmonds of Kiss. Then again Woods is only 36, so he’s still got plenty of time to address the difference.
Going on Tour
Just like musicians golfers live their life on the road. The PGA Tour runs from January to November every single year which is considerably longer than the majority of rock ‘n roll world tours.
And a lot of these golfers do live a pretty manic life on the tour. We’ve already covered the “groupies” when discussing Tiger the cheetah, but just like rock stars they earn ridiculous amounts of cash and have quite a lot of down time in which to spend it.
All Rock Stars Seem To Play!
Playing golf is now an essential part of being a rock god. It’s up there with trashing hotel rooms and owning some kind of reptile.
The list of rock musicians who enjoy spending some time on the fairways is pretty much endless. Alice Cooper is perhaps the most famous club swinging rocker and early in the 1980s he was playing 36 holes almost every day to battle his drug addiction.
Other rock star golfers include Adrian Young, the crazy drummer from No Doubt, and the one and only Meat Loaf! Apparently his driver goes like a bat out of hell…
