Pilates for a Better Golf Swing

Most golfers I meet and train tell me that their number one goal is to improve their swing and their score, but most have no idea how much of their golf swing is related to core strength along with flexibility and proper biomechanics.  Without these factors you will not only have swing faults but are at risk of serious injury (we all know golfers who have herniated disks, torn their rotator cuffs, and sprained their wrists among other common injuries).

Contrology, the historical name of the exercise method created by Joseph Pilates, seeks to bring the body into balance by making sure that every muscle around every joint is ready to move or stabilize when needed in any movement. Where this plays out in golf is that:

  • You learn to use your abdominals and back muscles properly to support and rotate your spine during your swing.
  • You learn to use the gluteus medius muscles at the outside of your hips to stabilize them and eliminate your slide or sway.
  • You learn to stabilize your shoulders for a better, stronger shoulder turn with less neck strain.
  • You strengthen your lower back to allow you to putt with ease.

There are many “golf-specific” Pilates programs out there, and many Pilates teachers saying they know how to train golfers. I mean it when I say that any Pilates training will help your golf swing. Joseph Pilates created the method to strengthen and stretch the body in such a way as to allow it to do anything, from playing golf to fighting in the army. A Pilates teacher who is familiar with golf will simply be able to speak your language and understand specific swing or game concerns.

In this video I will take you through a series of simple Pilates planking exercises that I call my Daily Core Series. Try these daily or at least every other day and you will see a difference in your swing (and your back will feel better too).
